Iraq: Security forces resume offensive against IS, southwest of Makhmur
The Iraqi security forces resumed their attack on the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) in their stronghold southwest of Makhmur on Wednesday.
Iraqi troops had retreated recently, from Nasr village near Qayyarah District (about 60 km south of Mosul), because of frequent suicide bomb attacks by IS militants.
The Iraqi security forces have been trying to retake the area for several months, and only started to make gains on Wednesday, recapturing the area after clashes with IS – in which they destroyed four vehicles belonging to the group and killed dozens of militants.
According to the Iraqi forces, the rest of the militants fled the village, allowing the army to open up safe routes for Nasr village residents to travel towards the nearby Makhmur district.
