At least five people were killed and four injured after a suicide bomber drove a car bomb into downtown Basra, Monday. The so-called Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) announced responsibility for the series of attacks.

The blast was one of a series of suicide attacks across the country. According to security officials, five people were killed and 14 others were wounded in another suicide attack at a checkpoint of Iraqi security forces northeast of Baghdad. Another three members of the Shia People's Mobilisation Forces were killed and nine more injured after a car bomb exploded close to them gathering in Baghdad.

The city of Nasiriyah also witnessed a suicide attack on Shia People's Mobilisation Forces, Monday, where 4 people were killed and more than 22 were injured. The attack took place at a restaurant in Obogar area in Abughar district in South of Nasiriyah.

The attacks coincide with continuing operations carried out by Iraqi forces, with the participation of the Shia People's Mobilisation Forces, to regain control of the areas controlled by the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL).
