Austria: Hundreds of farmers protest new fertiliser restrictions

About 800 protesters accompanied by some 400 tractors gathered in central Graz, Monday, to protest against the new groundwater protection regional programme that will restrict the use of fertilisers.

The protest organised by the citizens' initiative "Future Agriculture" headed from the Iron Gate to the Hauptplatz, before farmers parked some of their tractors on the main square. They also put up photos of their fields before and after the implementation of the fertiliser restriction rules. The regulations bring stricter fertiliser rules for around 1,800 farmers as a way to reduce the nitrate levels in the water and protect the groundwater.

Farmers could lose up to €10 million ($11.1 million) a year due to the fertiliser restriction rules, according to the spokesperson of the "Future Agriculture". Unions have given an ultimatum to state politicians saying they want the new law overturned by May 20, otherwise they will continue their protests.
