India: Forces shoot and kill teenager during separatist protest
Indian forces killed a teenager after firing on protesters in Kashmir, Saturday, on the second day of violent clashes in the disputed Himalayan region. Protesters and police hurled rocks at each other, with police firing teargas and live bullets into the crowd.
The protesters gathered in the western village of Narbal as shops, businesses and transport shutdown across the region for a strike called by separatists, who do not accept Indian rule over the Muslim majority state.
Since an insurgency erupted in 1989, Kashmiri separatists have demanded independence or a merger with neighbouring Pakistan. An estimated 68,000 people have died in the ensuing conflict.
