Pricey icy! Japanese 'white truffle' smashes Guinness record for world's most expensive ice cream
The Japanese ice cream brand Cellato won a place in the Guinness Book of Records with its new flavour, Byakuya, which sells for 880,000 yen (5,846 euros) a serving.
According to Masato Ohara, the CEO of Daniel’s-Ark, Inc., the use of white truffles from Alba, Italy, is the reason for the high price of the product, as the raw material sells for 2 million yen (13,288 euro) per kilogram.
“The chef who supervises our ice cream is a fusion chef, so we developed this ice cream as a fusion ice cream that mixes good ingredients from overseas and Japan," explained Ohara.
For Eriya, a customer, the ice cream’s flavour ‘flutters in the mouth’, and it gives the sensation of enjoying two different flavours at the same time. “As you eat more and more, the flavours come out in various forms, which makes it very enjoyable to eat," she said.
Ohara mentioned that people from different countries have shown interest in buying the popular ice cream, including customers from Arab countries and the Middle East. “It has become an ice cream that has attracted tremendous attention," he declared.
