Russia: EAEU becoming a centre of emerging multipolar world - Putin

The Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) is becoming one of the centres of the emerging 'multipolar world', Russian President Vladimir Putin claimed during a meeting of the broad-based Eurasian Economic Council (EEC) in Moscow on Thursday.

"Cooperation within the Eurasian Union continues to strengthen and that our union is consistently emerging as one of the independent and self-sufficient centres of the developing multipolar world," the Russian President said.

Putin also stressed the need to ensure that when citizens from EEU countries visit another state within the union, they 'feel comfortable as if they were at home'.

In turn, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko pointed out that intensified engagement with the SCO, BRICS and ASEAN should be the EAEU countries' response 'to sanctions pressure'.

The Kyrgyz President, Sadyr Japarov added that the union's member states have managed to 'maintain sufficient economic activity' despite the 'negative influence of external factors'.

Japarov provided some statistics to defend his argument. In the first quarter of 2023, the volume of agricultural production in the EAEU grew by almost three percent, and investment in fixed capital grew by more than four percent, he claimed.

Earlier, the Kremlin press service said Putin would hold separate bilateral meetings with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, as well as trilateral talks.
