Russian President Vladimir Putin made his first visit to Mariupol and the Donetsk region in general, on Sunday.

According to the Kremlin press service, President arrived in the city by helicopter, drove around districts, and inspected the coastline near the yacht club, the theatre building, and memorial sites.

During the ride, Deputy Prime Minister Marat Khusnullin reported to Putin on the progress of reconstruction efforts in the city and nearby areas, and told him 'about the construction of new residential neighbourhoods, social and educational facilities, housing and utility infrastructure and medical facilities.'

"People started coming back. When [people] saw that reconstruction was going on, they started coming back actively. [We notice] population growth," Khusnullin noted.

On September 30, 2022, President Vladimir Putin agreed to sign documents allowing the accession of the DPR and Lugansk People’s Republic (LPR), as well as the regions of Kherson and Zaporozhye, to the Russian Federation.

According to Moscow, it followed referenda in which people living in those areas exercised their right to self-determination and requested to join Russia.

Ukraine and its international allies condemned the move, calling it an annexation of Kiev’s sovereign territory.
