The first Egyptian amputee football league kicked off in Cairo on Friday.

A total of four teams, namely, Zamalek, Pyramids, El Mokawloon, and Z Sports Club participated in the edition.

"We held this tournament and tried to expedite the procedures in order to select a national team for Egypt because we have international matches in the African Nations Championship next October," Sara Samir, Vice President of the Egyptian Paralympic Committee for Amputees Football, said.

One of the players shared that the beginning of the league will be 'an incentive for all those who feel embarrassed to participate and do not know anything about the game' in Egypt.

"May God honour us and let us have a strong league that presents revolutionary elements that benefit the Egyptian national team in the continental championships, from which I hope to win a championship and write history for us in the Egyptian national team," Zaher Shabel added.

The tournament was reportedly held with the help of the Egyptian Paralympic Committee after it officially approved one-legged football as a sport.
