Toulouse FC fans expressed their sorrow at the death of football hero Just Fontaine on Wednesday as they arrived at their team’s stadium for the French Cup quarter final with Rodez.

The legendary striker passed away earlier in the day at the age of 89.

"We are saddened by his passing and he will remain a phenomenon which we will miss," stated one supporter.

"Of course we are saddened, we are dejected," said another. "He scored so many goals, 13 at World Cups I think. We are Toulousains, we are sorry for him and his family."

Born in Marrakech, Fontaine played most of his domestic career with Reims before managing both Paris Saint-Germain and Toulouse.

"It's quite something, he is a French monument, the best goal scorer at the World Cup. He played for big clubs during his era such as Reims. He is someone that will always matter to Toulouse despite not playing here but it's the way it is, he is a monument of Toulouse either way," added a third supporter.

Fontaine’s record for most goals in a single World Cup - 13 in six matches in 1958 - still stands today. Meanwhile, at Wednesday’s match, Toulouse beat Rodez 6-1 to progress to the semi finals.
