Germany: Strikes at Dusseldorf and Cologne Bonn regional airports ground more than 300 flights
Flights from the German regional airports of Dusseldorf and Cologne Bonn were disrupted on Monday by a 24-hour strike by the Verdi union.
Footage shows empty inside and outside premises of airports with information boards showing delayed flights while airplanes could be seen standing still on the runways.
According to Dusseldorf airport, number of scheduled flights dropped from 330 to 89. It was also reported that 29 flights were diverted to other airports and seven were rescheduled for the next day.
On the other hand, of the 136 scheduled daily passenger flights at Cologne Bonn airport, only two were operating as planned.
Verdi union announced the strike on Friday after collective bargaining efforts for public service workers and aviation security workers failed to come close to an agreement.
According to Verdi, there is still a long way to go to reach an agreement in negotiations on behalf of the more than 2,5 million federal government employees and local authorities.
Earlier this month, the union paralysed air traffic with one-day strikes at seven major airports, including Frankfurt and Munich, affecting almost 300,000 passengers.
