Make a wish! Dashcam captures celestial body flying over Krasnoyarsk

Locals in Krasnoyarsk witnessed a meteor blazing across the night sky in a bright yellow flash on Tuesday, as seen in video captured by a driver’s dashcam.

According to Sergei Veselkov, head of the Reshetnev University’s observatory, the celestial body was a bolide, which would have likely measured from one to five metres long.

"There is no doubt that it is a bolide. Judging by its brightness, and it is brighter than the full moon, the bolide is several metres in size, one to five metres. And such rocks burn up almost completely in the atmosphere as they pass through, although some of the material may fall to the Earth's surface," Veselkov said.

However, Sergei Karpov, a leading researcher at the Kirensky Institute of Physics in Krasnoyarsk begged to differ, claiming the bolide was much smaller.

"In my opinion, the size could have been a few centimetres to a meter. Otherwise, there would have been a strong shockwave with sound," he explained.

A bolide is described as a very bright large meteor with noticeable angular dimensions, although the International Astronomical Union has no official definition for the term.
