Hundreds of supporters of opposition leader Rahul Gandhi braved heavy snowfall in Srinagar on Monday for the closing ceremony of the Bharat Jodo yatra (Unite India) march.
The march was organised and led by Rahul Gandhi, leader of India's largest opposition party, the Indian National Congress (INC). It covered 3,500 kilometres across 12 Indian states for 135 days.
Thousands of people joined Gandhi on his 'journey', with the aim of uniting India against Narendra Modi’s ruling BJP government.
“It’s been a wonderful journey so far for us, especially for the people who have accompanied Rahul ji (Rahul Gandhi),” said Muhammad Abdur Rehman, a march participant.
“This Yatra (journey) is about uniting the country, the people of the country and moreover this is not meant for any election purpose or to strengthen the congress party, but this is much needed for the people of the country,” he said.
Supporters gathered for a flag-raising ceremony outside the INC headquarters of Srinagar before flocking to the Sher-e-Kashmir International Cricket Stadium for a public rally.
