Vehicles wait their turn to get fuel at a petrol station in Karachi on Monday, a day after fuel prices hikes.

Finance Minister Ishaq Dar announced Sunday morning a 35 rupees increase in petrol and diesel prices, in a televised address just minutes before the new prices came into force. In the speech, which began at 10:50 a.m., Dar unveiled the pricing revision, which took effect at 11:00 a.m.

"The governor had done it because of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). They put everything artificially. They kept the dollar under a false level. There will be oppression if an artificial level is observed," said Asad Abbas, a resident.

Pakistan raised petrol and diesel prices after the country's currency depreciated this week and just days before the IMF visits the country to discuss the stalled ninth review of Pakistan's financing programme.

"The rate of petrol has increased so how to fill it now? Our leaders, especially PMLN, should be embarrassed," said Ali Imran, a resident.

The cash-strapped country needs to complete the ninth review of the USD 7 billion International Monetary Fund program, which will not only disburse USD 1.2 billion but also unlock inflows from friendly countries and other multilateral lenders.
