The first statue of Lionel Messi wearing an Argentinian jersey with three stars and the World Cup trophy was unveiled last weekend in Mar del Plata.

The fiber-cement piece of art weighs approximately 120-140 kilos and reproduces the Argentinian pointing to the sky, as this is the way he usually celebrates his goals. The statue has attracted many people, who stop by the art to immortalise the moment with a picture.

"The truth is that when people arrive at the beach and find the statue of Messi, it draws their attention. It gives them hope, they take photos. They call more people so that they can see it. So, that is very good," explained Sol Escobar, a resident of Buenos Aires.

According to the designer of the statue, Victor Collucio, the creation started during the World Cup tournament and was completed around the end of the competition.

"The repercussions are because of the figure of Messi, which means world level and now much more for the Argentinians. So, the repercussions are tremendous," stated the sculptor.

Argentina defeated France last December and brought home their third World Cup title.
