'Iceberg A-74' broke away from the Brunt Ice Shelf in Antarctica on Sunday, January 22, as reported on the website of the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) on Monday.
"A huge iceberg (1,550 square kilometres) almost the size of Greater London broke away from the 150-metre-thick Brunt Ice Shelf. It broke off after cracks that had appeared naturally over the past few years spread across the entire ice shelf of the glacier," a post on the website read.
On Thursday, Roscosmos published an image, taken on Tuesday by the Meteor-M hydrometeorological satellite, which shows a fault that had formed between an iceberg and the main glacier.
The Antarctic Survey of Britain added that this is the second time a huge chunk of ice has detached from the Brunt Ice Shelf in the last two years.
In February 2021, an iceberg measuring 1,270 square kilometres, which is comparable to the size of St. Petersburg, broke away from Antarctica.
