The creation of a BRICS currency will be discussed at a summit to be held in South Africa in late August, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said. The politician made the statement after talks with Angolan President Joao Lourenco in Luanda on Wednesday.
"The initiatives on the need to think about the creation of internal currencies within the framework of the BRICS, within the framework of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States, which were announced just the other day, go in this direction. This will certainly be discussed at the BRICS summit, which will be held in South Africa at the end of August," Lavrov said.
The foreign minister added that a group of African countries, including President Lourenco, had been invited to the summit.
Sergei Lavrov arrived in Angola on 24 January on a working visit. During the trip, he held talks with President Joao Lourenco and Foreign Minister Tete Antonio. Lavrov had earlier visited South Africa and Eswatini as part of an African tour.
