Angola: West used Ukraine to pursue colonial policy against Russian-speaking population - Lavrov

The West used Ukraine to pursue an openly colonial policy towards the Russian-speaking population, as Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated during a press conference following talks with Angolan Foreign Minister Tete Antonio on Wednesday in Luanda.

"We drew attention to the actions of the West, which over the years has created reasons for Ukraine to be used directly as a tool in a hybrid, total hybrid war against our country and also used Ukraine to pursue a blatantly colonial policy against the Russian-speaking population of Ukraine", said Lavrov.

In turn, Antonio noted that in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, Angola supports 'the end of hostilities, a cease-fire'.

Sergei Lavrov arrived in Angola on a working visit on Tuesday. Earlier, the Foreign Minister visited South Africa and Eswatini as part of an African tour, where he held talks with the political leadership of the countries.

Moscow launched a military offensive in Ukraine in late February after recognising the independence of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics (DPR and LPR), claiming that Kiev had failed to guarantee their special status under the 2014 Minsk Agreements, and urging Ukraine to declare itself officially neutral and give assurances that it would never join NATO.

Kiev denounced the Russian action as an invasion. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky imposed martial law throughout the country, announcing a general mobilisation, while the EU and the US imposed several rounds of sanctions on Moscow.
