Switzerland: 'This war can make the crisis worse unless the aggressor loses' - Olena Zelenska at Davos WEF

Olena Zelenska, Ukraine’s first lady, claimed that a whole way of life across the world was under 'threat’ due to the ongoing conflict and could only be saved by Russia’s defeat, while speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos on Tuesday.

"There is a threat of collapse of the life to which people in the world are accustomed or to which people in the world aspire," she told her audience.

"What will happen to inflationary processes when state borders fall? <…> What will happen to the cost of living when not millions but tens of millions of people will be forced to save their lives? <…> How does the world want to achieve climate neutrality if it has not yet stopped even the burning of entire cities in Ukraine?" she asked.

"You all know that Russian aggression was never intended to be limited to Ukrainian territories. This war can go further and make the crisis worse unless the aggressor loses," Zelenska predicted.

She also commented on some of her country’s 'peace formula' proposals, in relation to ’nuclear safety' and 'food security'.

"When we talk about radiation and nuclear safety in the Peace formula, we mean that we cannot allow the possibility of a new Chernobyl," she stated. "When we talk about food security in the Peace Formula, we mean that everyone has the right to food."

When President Volodymyr Zelensky outlined the full 10-point plan in December, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova responded that 'such pseudo-peace initiatives are masked by words about commitment to diplomatic methods of settlement' but said it was clear Kiev still wanted 'to win on the battlefield'.

Moscow launched a military offensive in Ukraine in late February 2022, after recognising the independence of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics (DPR and LPR), claiming that Kiev had failed to guarantee their special status under the 2014 Minsk Agreements, and urging Ukraine to declare itself officially neutral and give assurances that it would never join NATO.

Kiev denounced the Russian action as an invasion. Zelensky imposed martial law throughout the country, announcing a general mobilisation, while the EU and US imposed several rounds of sanctions on Moscow.

The 53rd World Economic Forum Annual Meeting takes place on January 16-20.
