Residents could be seen near Futian Port checkpoint as the border between mainland China and Hong Kong started to reopen gradually.

Footage filmed on Sunday shows residents gathering near the checkpoint and queuing for taxi and public transport.

“I haven’t been home for four months. I came to Hong Kong to go to school in September, and I haven’t returned since then. I thought I would have to change my number to come back and I would have to be quarantined. After customs clearance, I don’t need to make an appointment to return to the mainland, so I hurried back on the first day of customs clearance,” shared one of residents Cheng Xue.

The governments of mainland China and Hong Kong announced the first phase of customs clearance arrangements on Thursday, January 5. With COVID-19 restrictions getting lifted since January 8, it is expected that 60,000 people will be able to cross the border daily at seven border checkpoints.
