Iraq: 'Performance was not convincing' - National team fans disappointed after goalless opening match against Oman
Iraqi fans expressed their disappointment on Friday in Basra after the national team's opening match in Arabian Gulf Cup ended in a draw with Oman.
"The performance was not convincing as we saw from the Iraqi national team. There is sterility in the attack, the performance is not convincing, and this has been a problem we have had for a long time," said an Iraqi fan, after watching the match at the stadium.
"The Omani team did its best today and the Iraqi team too. No one fell short, and the result was a tie in the end. We rejoice for Iraq and we rejoice for Oman," Omani fan said. "The next match, God willing, we hope to reach the final and play with Iraq again," he added.
Throughout the ninety minutes of the match, which was played at the Basra International Stadium, neither team managed to score and the match ended in a goalless draw.
The Swiss President of the International Football Federation, Gianni Infantino attended the cup opening.
Iraq hosted the Arabian Gulf Cup for the second time in its history after the first tournament was held in the capital Baghdad in 1979. Due to the security situation, Iraq has been unable to host almost any competitive matches for the past 20 years.
