Brazil: 'He was an icon!' - 80 drones take to skies of Santos to honour Pele amid NYE celebrations
The municipality of Santos held a drone show featuring 80 quadcopters to commemorate the passing of football legend Pele during New Year's celebrations at Gonzaga Beach on Saturday.
The drones were fitted with lights and formed various shapes in the sky, including the silhouette of the late World Cup star. A live music show was also organised to ring in the New Year.
"He was an icon in Brazil, a phenomenal guy who marked our history, and our nation with his talent,” one Pele fan remarked.
"My grandfather saw Pele play, my father saw Pele play, I saw Pele saying goodbye, my son cheers for Santos, my grandson cheers for Santos, my wife cheers for Santos. Edson Arantes do Nascimento died, but Pelé is eternal period,” added a second.
Soccer legend Pele, considered by many to be the greatest player of all time, died Thursday at the age of 82 after a long battle with cancer.
The Brazilian was the only player in history to win three World Cups, in 1958, 1962 and 1970. Pele also holds the world record of 1,279 goals in 1,363 appearances across all matches, including friendlies.
