Lottery customers queued in Madrid to purchase an El Gordo (The Fat One) lottery ticket on Thursday, in the hope of winning part of a possible €2.5 billion ($2.6 billion) in prize money.

In the footage, people can be seen queueing around the block in order to buy a ticket.

El Gordo has a long tradition dating back to 1812, making it one of the world's oldest lotteries, and it also is said to have the biggest prize pool of any lottery pot in the world.

Speaking during an interview, Lorena Ortega a lottery customer said "I'm queuing because it's a tradition that our family and I have done for many years; and the truth is that we love the Dona Manolita lottery. We queue because it's a tradition and if we don't do it, it's strange."

The first draw for the Christmas Lottery will take place on December 22.
