Russian President Vladimir Putin was shown a deepfake of Olaf Scholz, a synthesised AI-based video of the German chancellor at the Artificial Intelligence Applications exhibition in Moscow on Thursday.
The demonstration was held as part of an introduction to Sberbank's deepfake detection programme. The video included a speech by 'Scholz' referring to the words of the hero of Russian crime drama 'Brother 2', Danila Bagrov, and a quote from former prime minister Viktor Chernomyrdin.
The experts claimed that losses to the global economy from nefarious use of artificial intelligence have been estimated at over $400 billion, over the past year.
They also explained that the programme they had created made it possible to analyse such videos and identify details that are invisible to the human eye, but are typical of deepfakes.
According to Putin, the deepfake detection software is in demand, and should be offered to consumers not only in Russia, but also abroad.
