The UN rights chief on Thursday asked Tehran to put an end to the 'unnecessary and disproportionate use of force' against protests which have rocked the nation in the aftermath of the death in police custody of Mahsa 'Jina' Amini.

"The unnecessary and disproportionate use of force must come to an end," said United Nations' high commissioner for human rights Volker Turk while addressing an emergency session of the Council in Geneva.

It follows a request, submitted by Germany and Iceland, to discuss "the reported deaths of at least 304 people, including 41 children" following protests after the death of Amini in September.
