Moscow's Basmanny District Court took the decision on Monday to postpone the hearing of the liquidation case against the Jewish Agency Sochnut, until October 19.

"We think it's an absolutely justified request on our part," said lawyer for the agency, Andrey Grishaev. "It has been done not to delay the trial. Currently we are correcting possible comments from the Ministry of Justice, which we agree with. They are the grounds for this lawsuit. We are sure that we will eliminate the remarks, it is already in the process."

"We have submitted the corresponding documents to the Ministry of Justice to amend some of our constituent documents. Due to regulations, the MoJ's response is not instantaneous, which is why they have asked the court to adjourn the case," he continued.

Sochnut is a worldwide Jewish organisation that helps Jews travel to Israel, and has been working in Russia since 1989.

The case relates to the agency’s alleged violation of Russian laws on data collection during its activities. According to media reports, the Justice Ministry applied for the liquidation after an audit allegedly revealed agency branch offices in Omsk, Novosibirsk and Saratov did not have certified information protection tools
.

However, Grishaev added that he is sure that claims about non-compliance with personal data legislation will be shown to be unfounded.

According to media reports, representatives from the Ministry of Justice objected to the postponement of the case.
