Azerbaijan: Baku residents comment on escalated Nagorno-Karabakh conflict

Baku residents commented on the recent escalation of the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan over the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region, Wednesday.

Almost everyone said that their attitude towards recent clashes was negative, though they did not see any other way to settle the decades-long conflict.

"My attitude towards the things happening is negative. Many acquaintances are going to war, we do not want to spill the blood. We want that everything is settled peacefully. But I am afraid that we are not talking about peace at the moment - we have to return our lands," said Baku resident Elvin Shirinbeily.

A similar opinion was voiced by another local, Zhalya Jafarova, "I do not believe that the conflict can be settled. We have been living for 30 years almost with martial law. If we had been able to settle the conflict peacefully, it would have been done during these 30 years."

According to another local, Sabina Shamilova, steps taken by the Azeri government are pointed in the right direction.

"We have tried for 30 years to solve everything peacefully. Unfortunately, we came to the situation we are in now. I think everything is right," explained the young woman.

Addressing Armenians and their government Baku resident Amil Gajiev stated, "As Mr. President said, I will address the mothers, 'Do not send your children to alien soil.' And for Armenian authorities, 'Leave, stop spilling blood, you are on the occupied territories'."

Fighting in the disputed region broke out on Sunday when Azeri and ethnic Armenian soldiers exchanged fire. It's been the heaviest clashes in the region since 2016 with dozens of casualties reported. Both sides blame each other for the escalation, imposed martial law, and announced mobilisation.

The Nagorno-Karabakh region is internationally recognised as part of Azerbaijan but has an independent government led by a majority group of ethnic Armenians.
