Greece: Locals protest refugee camps on Lesbos
Local residents gathered at Sappho Square in Mytilini, Tuesday, to decry the "shameful living conditions" in which migrants are living in Lesbos and to demand the "immediate evacuation" of refugees and migrants from the Greek islands" following the catastrophic fire at the Moria camp last week.
Demonstrators rejected the establishment of new camps on the island and also demanded a mass test for COVID-19 for themselves and for all migrants and refugees currently on Lesbos.
The main banner seen in the protest read, "The islands don't want concentration camps."
Thousands of migrants and refugees continue to sleep rough, while only 800 have been relocated to a new camp, following the fires that broke out at the Moria reception centre on Wednesday, September 9, burning large parts of it to the ground.
The Moria camp was the largest in Europe, exceeding almost four times its maximum capacity of 3,100 people, hosting around 13,000 migrants living in poor sanitary conditions.
