Belgium: 'Belarus has woken up' - Tikhanovskaya addresses EU parliament on protests
Belarusian opposition leader Svetlana Tikhanovskaya said that "Belarus has woken up" as she addressed the European Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee about the protests in the country via video link on Tuesday, in Brussels.
"We are not the opposition anymore. We are the majority now. The peaceful revolution is taking place," said Tikhanovskaya, while speaking from Vilnius.
"The revolution in Belarus is not a geopolitical revolution. It is neither a pro-Russian nor anti-Russian revolution. It is neither an anti-EU, nor pro-EU revolution. It is a democratic revolution," she stressed.
Tikhanovskaya, who contests the official results of the election that awarded her 10.12 percent of the vote, added that the demands of the opposition movement were "simple: a free fair and election."
Belarus has been swept by anti-government protests following the disputed presidential election on August 9 that saw five-term incumbent President Alexander Lukashenko re-elected.
On August 14 Tikhanovskaya called for the formation of a coordination council "to ensure the transfer of power in Belarus.".
