Belarus: 'We need truth' – Lukashenko accuses Russia of secretly sending servicemen to Minsk

President of Belarus Aleksander Lukashenko accused Kremlin of sending 33 servicemen to Minsk ahead of the presidential election, Saturday.

"Trying to hide it in Russia, where it comes from, and say we knew they were about to come – this is bullshit," the leader said about the detained people who he alleged were the Russian servicemen. He emphasised he was the only person in Belarus who could grant such permission to enter the country to foreign servicemen, and, according to him this permission wasn't granted.

Lukashenko said those 33 men were just the first group. "We need to deal with the ones who ordered, who sent them here. Therefore, well done finding out that this is only the first group. As far as I understand this is only the first group of 180 or 200 people, who were planned (to be sent) to travel to Belarus," the president added. "We do not hide anything, we need the truth," concluded Lukashenko.

On Wednesday the Belarusian state news agency BelTA reported of 33 Russian citizens who belong to the so-called Wagner Private Military Company detained in the country by Belarusian law enforcement agencies. BelTA then said 32 of them had arrived in Minsk on July 24 and then moved to a sanatorium near the capital, aiming "to destabilise the situation in the run-up to the election campaign." The 33rd man was arrested in southern Belarus.

On Thursday Kremlin Press Secretary Dmitri Peskov stated the alleged involvement of the group into the presidential election campaign in Belarus was "speculation." "We have been aware of 33 Russian citizens detained in Belarus yesterday, and of 200 people who are still wanted. There is no information about any illegal actions of the Russians that could be the reason for the detention," he said.
