The first passenger train connecting mainland Russia with the Crimean peninsula via the Kerch Strait arrived in Sevastopol on Wednesday.

The train had left from Saint Petersburg on Monday and reached its destination some 43,5 hours later at 9.25 am (6:25 GMT) on Wednesday morning.

Hundreds of locals and Black Sea Navy Fleet orchestra welcomed the rail transport at the railway station.

The train passed the Crimean Bridge in 30 minutes, slowing down deliberately during the crossing so that the passengers were able to see the bridge properly.

Russian President Vladimir Putin unveiled the Crimean Bridge rail connection on Monday. The arrival of the first Moscow-Simferopol passenger train is expected on Thursday morning.
