
UK: Mourinho praises France on World Cup victory, criticises VAR penalty decision
Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho spoke about France’s 4-2 victory over Croatia during an interview in Manchester on Tuesday.
“They [France] had a very good run until they get into the final and today they won it. I think the world will praise them for that, I’m doing that already,” said the Portuguese coach.
“I think 4 million Croatians, 23 Croatian players plus the coaching staff will be very disappointed,” he said adding that at half time the “best team” was losing because the VAR system.
“The concept of the VAR is about important mistakes of the referee. This was not one of these cases,” Mourinho went on to say.
Morinho was referring to a controversial decision by referee Nestor Pitana to award a penalty in the 35th minute after Croatian player Ivan Perisic appeared to touch the ball with his hand.
The former Chelsea manager was pragmatic about France’s victory saying that the “the reality is who won it and France is the champion.
The World Cup final was held at Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium on Sunday.
