USA: Sanders condemns ballgame shooting as suspect said to be Bernie supporter
US Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders condemned the shooting of several high level Republican Party politicians at a baseball practice field Alexandria outside Washington DC, Wednesday, after reports that the alleged shooter was his supporter.
Speaking from Washington DC during a session on whether to impose sanctions against Russia for alleged election meddling, Sanders said "I am sickened by this despicable act and let me be as clear as I can be. Violence of any kind is unacceptable in our society."
He added that "real change can only come about through nonviolent action, and anything else runs against our most deeply held American values."
"My hopes and prayers are that Representative Scalise, congressional staff and the Capitol Police officers who were wounded make a quick and full recovery. I also want to thank the Capitol Police for their heroic actions to prevent further harm."
Eyewitnesses report that between 50 and 100 rounds were fired on a group of Republican lawmakers during a baseball game. The politicians were practicing for a charity annual Congressional baseball game which is due to take place on Thursday at Nationals Park.
US President Donald Trump has since announced that the suspect, named as James T. Hodgkinson, was killed during the police response.
