France: Macron promises 'voice of hope' as he goes through to runoff
Independent presidential candidate Emmanuel Macron addressed his supporters in Paris, Sunday, after exit-poll figures showed his qualification for the second round in the French elections.
Macron thanked rival candidates Francois Fillon and Benoit Hamon for voicing their support for him in the upcoming presidential runoff, vowing to campaign with “the voice of hope that we want for our country and for Europe.”
After the first round of votes, estimated figures put Le Pen on 21.7 percent, trailing Macron, who was predicted to have taken 23.7 percent of the vote.
The numbers come from initial exit polls after the last polling stations closed at 20:00 local time (18:00 GMT). If correct, Le Pen and Macron will go through to a second round scheduled for May 7.
