UN: Ban Ki-moon says final farewells at UNHQ as he steps down as UN chief
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon bid farewell to UN staff, delegates and senior advisers at UN Headquarters in New York City on Friday, as he steps down as head of the international body.
In a brief speech Ban Ki-moon joked, "Now I feel a bit like a Cinderella. Tomorrow at midnight everything changes. It is a bit awkward. I will have to do all by my own. So far I have been assisted and supported by thousands and thousands of your hardworking staff and member states. But let us see how I survive."
He concluded that while he would not be secretary general much longer, "I will always proudly carry the title of global citizen. I will be your honorary ambassador. I will always be the child of the United Nations."
Ban Ki-moon will end his tenure as UN secretary-general on December 31. His successor will be the former Portuguese Prime Minister and High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres, who was unanimously elected by the UN Security Council as the new secretary-general in October. He will serve as the ninth UN chief from January 1, 2017, until December 31, 2021.
