UK: Cargo ship towed to safety after colliding with barge in English Channel
The remaining 12 people on board a 23-person-crew cargo ship helped manoeuvre the 'Saga Sky' vessel to safety after it had collided with a barge carrying rocks in the English Channel near Dover on Sunday. Eleven of the crew members were evacuated earlier by helicopter. A tug was seen towing the heavily damaged vessel towards Rye Harbour from the cliffs above Capel le Ferne.
High winds made it particularly challenging to assist the crew, with Storm Angus making conditions choppy at sea. After losing all of its power the cargo ship had been pushed into the barge due to severe winds. The Maritime and Coastguard Agency declared the situation to be a major incident.
Storm Angus hit parts of southern England with up to 97mph (156kmh) winds and up to five metre (16 foot) high waves, causing flooding and major damage. Severe flood warnings have been issued and Devon police also declared a major incident when the River Mole burst its banks. High winds hindered fire fighters from extinguishing a blaze in West Sussex.
