USA: 8 injured after American Airlines flight 383 catches fire on Chicago runway
An American Airlines Boeing 767 caught fire during takeoff on the runway at O'Hare Airport in Chicago on Friday, filling the plane cabin with smoke and forcing the 170 crew and passengers to evacuate.
The plane, bound for Miami, was reported as having mechanical issues related to the engine and had made an emergency stop. An explosion went off which resulted in a fire break out, causing heavy black smoke.
Passengers moved to the left side of the plane, slid out of the cabin with the use of the emergency slides and ran across the grass on the runway away from the fire. They were later taken by bus back to the terminal to be put on another flight the same evening.
Eight people suffered minor injuries as a result of the incident and the National Transportation Safety Board is said to be carrying out an investigation.
