France: Cazeneueve denies Brexit alters Calais Jungle situation
Bernard Cazeneuve, French Interior Minister, said on Wednesday in Paris that a British exit from the European Union will not affect the situation with refugees, stranded in Calais, who are trying to reach the UK.
"The reality is that the Touquet Treaty which allows the intervention of British forces in Calais, just as the French forces are at Dover, is not jeopardised by the UK leaving the EU, as the President of the Republic reminded us this morning in Brussels," he told the press.
"The reality is that, because of our bilateral agreements, which are outside of the EU, the border at Calais is closed and is destined to remain so," he added.
The Mayor of Calais Natacha Bouchart condemned the Minister's statement, saying it did not "take into account the difficulties that we face every day."
