Netherlands: Europe needs to 'share the burden' with Turkey, says Merkel
German Chancellor Angela Merkel discussed Europe's ongoing refugee crisis at a press conference in Middleburg on Thursday. She was in the Netherlands to receive the International Four Freedoms Medal during an official ceremony at the Dutch-based Roosevelt Foundation in Middelburg.
Merkel pressed her policy of Europe needing to "share the burden" with Turkey, with regards to accommodating Syrian refugees. She said, "I must once again point out that Turkey, with 75 million citizens, is accommodating around 2.7 million Syrian refugees. And the European Union is, with its 500 million citizens, probably still not accommodating as many as 1 million."
The Roosevelt Foundation praised Merkel for her role in the European financial and migrant crises, for her stance and efforts to resolve the conflict in Ukraine as well as "great moral leadership," according to the official statement of the foundation.
