Macedonia: Albanians protest erection of 55 metre-tall cross in Skopje
Several hundred protesters, predominantly of Albanian ethnicity, gathered at a roundabout in the Butel Municipality of Skopje on Thursday night to demonstrate against the erection a 55 metre (180ft) tall cross which was set to be installed.
Joined by officials from the Democratic Union for Integration (DUI) party, protesters pitched tents and waved Albanian flags as a deployment of police were called to the scene to monitor their activities. Protesters immobilised the proposed site of the cross by destroying a fence around the structure, filling in the hole planned for its base, and burying tools.
On February 16 a monument depicting the black-double headed eagle, the symbol of Albanians was unveiled on a roundabout in the neighbouring Cair Municipality of the capital.
