Turkey: Police enforce govt. seizure of Koza Ipek Holding in Ankara
Turkish police arrived at the Koza Ipek Holding's Ankara headquarters to notify the board of directors that they had been replaced by a trustee panel, Tuesday, one day after the government seizure of the media corporation.
A crowd of protesters gathered outside the building and scuffled with police, who responded by firing tear gas at them. Lawyers of the company tried to prevent the officials entering the offices, noting that they did not have the legal authorization, although the officials finally managed to force their way in to the building with the help of armed police.
Koza Ipek Holding is a Turkish conglomerate which includes media assets such as the widely read Bugun newspaper, the smaller Millet daily, and two TV and radio stations, Bugun TV and Kanalturk TV. After Monday's seizure, the holding has been placed under a panel of trustees purportedly following a court order in an ongoing process against the chairman, Akin Ipek.
