Spain: See San Fermin festival explode into life
Revellers bedecked in red and white kick-started festivities in the city of Pamplona, Monday, as the famed San Fermin running of the bulls festival got underway.
Kicking off at 12:00 local time, the nine-day street party was jump-started by officials symbolically letting off a firework, locally known as the "chupinazo," to begin the festival. Huge crowds of revellers, dressed in white outfits with traditional red trim, doused themselves in Spanish wine - in keeping with the festival's traditions. Many individuals stage-dived from statues into the crowd below.
The pre-party is just a taster of Tuesday's celebrations, which includes the "encierro" or running of the bulls event, where hundreds run alongside the animals through the town, among other musical and dance events. The San Fermin festival, which runs until July 14, draws an estimated one million people each year.
