Iraq: Celebrations as curfew lifted after 12 years
Cheering citizens took the streets of Baghdad as the government lifted a 12-year-old nightly curfew on Saturday. Iraqi government officials said the decision was carried out to make the city more livable.
The curfew, which was most recently in effect from midnight to 5 a.m. local time (2100 to 0200 GMT), was meant to curb violence in the city following the 2003 US-led invasion.
Hours before the curfew was lifted, several suicide bomb attacks in Baghdad killed at least 36 people and injured 94.
