Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke of his desire to change the immigration status of Ukrainians fleeing conflict in the country at The National Mineral Resources University in St. Petersburg, Monday.
Putin stated that many Ukrainian citizens are making the "right choice" in attempting to move to Russia in order to "avoid mobilisation" and prevent being "pushed like cannon-fodder into the bullets [of the conflict]," but emphasised that current laws on the transit of Ukrainian citizens into Russia means that they can only remain in Russia for up to 30 days.
This results in people "getting caught and being sent into the bullets again" and in order to prevent this, Putin said that he will "change something" to facilitate increasing the duration of stay in Russia for some Ukrainians.
