Russia: Icy cyclones are shutting down much of Russia's Far East
Russia's Far East was hit by a fierce winter storm on Thursday with driving winds, heavy snow and severe frosts hitting the Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk region. The entire region including Sakhalin, Kuril Islands and the Okhotsk Sea were affected as were large parts of the Russian mainland.
Winds as high as 200 kph (124 mph) were recorded during the storm, while temperatures plummeted to as low as -52 degrees Fahrenheit (-47 degrees Celsius). Forecasters predict another cyclone will hit the area by Saturday
Emergency workers are currently trying to clear roads and restore power to ten settlements in Sakhalin alone, while schools were closed and people sent home from work. The ferry connecting Sakhalin with the mainland, and the airport were also shut down.
