USA: Meet Hero, the calf with prosthetic legs
Hero the calf was happily munching on grass at his home at Selah Ranch in the U.S. state of Texas on May 24, seemingly unconcerned with a disability he has. The 15-month-old bull calf wears prostheses on his hind legs, which must be refitted every few months as he grows.
Hero's owner, former veterinary technician and retired truck driver Kitty Martin, rescued Hero after seeing him on a Virginia farm, where his legs were so badly damaged by frostbite that they had to be amputated. He received his first set of prostheses in December with the help of animal surgeons at Texas A&M University. Martin says she hopes to use Hero as a therapy animal for the Wounded Warrior Project, a nonprofit organisation that assists wounded U.S. military veterans.
Hero received his third set of prostheses in late May, which Martin hopes will last until Hero wears them out.
