Belgium: Conflict in Ukraine making 'China relationship more complex' - EU trade commissioner
European Commissioner for Trade Valdis Dombrovskis claimed rising tensions between the EU and China amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine are making relationships 'more complex', with the bloc seeking to 'rebalance and de-risk' trade with Beijing.
Dombrovskis’ comments came during a news briefing following a meeting on the EU’s trade relationship with the USA and China in Brussels on Thursday.
“In general, Russia's brutal war against Ukraine is making the context for the EU-China relationship more complex,” he said.
Earlier, the trade commissioner named Beijing as an 'essential trading partner' with a combined value worth over 20.3 billion Euros per day. However, he said the partnership was 'unbalanced'.
“Our economic relationships continued to be unbalanced characterized by a large trade deficit, distorted economic practices, and strategic dependencies,” Dombrovskis said.
“Our priority is, therefore, to rebalance and de-risk the relationship reducing the EU and promoting transparency, predictability, and reciprocity,” he continued.
