Clashes erupted between protesters and police in Nairobi on Thursday during the third wave of Kenya's anti-government demonstrations, despite the administration declaring the rallies illegal.

Footage shows police firing tear gas to disperse the protesters, who were seen hurling stones and other objects towards the officers. Similar rallies took place on Monday, and the Monday before that.

Demonstrators are protesting sharp price rises due to high inflation across the country, as well as alleged corruption in the last presidential election.

Opposition leader Raila Amolo Odinga backed the protests, and announced similar action twice a week until the government lowers the cost of living, enacts electoral reforms, and addresses last year's disputed elections.

The government has defended its economic record and last year’s vote, and called for an end to the rallies.
