Former President Jair Bolsonaro arrived at the Brasilia International Airport on Thursday, returning home for the first time since the riots which followed his election defeat.

Footage shows Bolsonaro’s jet landing in the Brazilian capital as hundreds of supporters gathered to greet him. Large crowds were also seen outside the hotel where the former president was reported to be staying.

Bolsonaro was returning from Florida, where he had stayed for three months. He arrived at the Brasilia International Airport shortly before 7 am local time (10:00 GMT) amid heavy security. Around 200 supporters were reportedly waiting for his arrival at the airport terminal.

The 68-year-old is facing five Supreme Court investigations which could carry prison sentences if he is found guilty.

They include his alleged role in the January 8 riots in Brasilia when his supporters stormed the National Congress, Supreme Court and presidential palace, following elections which saw Lula da Silva return to the presidency.

Some of those present were calling for a military coup to restore Bolsonaro to power.

Lula da Silva described the rioters as 'fascist fanatics'. Bolsonaro himself defended the right to peaceful protest but claimed the events had 'crossed the line'.
