State of Palestine: Violence as Palestinian protesters clash with Israeli security forces at Gaza border
At least five people were reportedly injured in clashes between Palestinian protesters and Israeli security forces during a protest to commemorate 'Land Day' at the Israel-Gaza border on Thursday.
Footage shows hundreds of protesters waving Palestinian flags as they attempted to climb a border wall. Israeli forces responded with tear gas and rubber bullets to quell the unrest. Injured protesters were also seen laying on the ground and being rushed away by ambulances.
A rally was also organised further away from the border fence, where senior figures from militant groups Hamas and Islamic Jihad addressed crowds.
“We call for an escalation of engagement and confrontation with the occupation for the sake of liberating Palestine,” said Ismail Radwan, a senior member of Hamas.
"We will keep fighting this occupation. We will not let this occupation calm down or settle on our land. This land is not his land. This is the land of the fathers and grandfathers of our Palestinian people,” added Khader Habib from the Islamic Jihad group.
'Land Day' was decreed in remembrance of the events of March 30, 1976, when the Palestinian population revolted against Israel's decision to confiscate large areas of Palestinian land.
