Ukraine: UAVs strike college dormitory in Kiev Region - Ukrainian DefMin
The Ukrainian Ministry of Defence reported that Russian Armed Forces' unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) struck the areas surrounding dormitories at the vocational college in Rzhyshchiv in Kiev Region on Wednesday.
Footage shows damaged buildings at the Rzhyshchiv's vocational college, including a dormitory with partially collapsed floors, as well as the rescue workers and soldiers.
"As a result of enemy UAVs strikes, the Russians hit the territory of a dormitory of a vocational college in Rzhyshchiv in Kiev Region, there were deaths and injuries among civilians," the DefMin stated in the daily evening report.
The State Emergency Service of Ukraine said that Russian UAVs hit the fourth and fifth floors of the dormitory building which partially collapsed after subsequent fires.
"As of 6:00 pm local time (14:00 GMT), eight people were killed, seven injured and one rescued. 116 people and 27 equipment units were involved at the accident scene", the department reported.
The Ukrainian State Emergency Service also added that 'debris removal and search and rescue operations continue'.
At the time of publication, the Russian side had not officially commented on the Ukrainian claims. Moscow has repeatedly claimed that its forces do not target civilians or civilian infrastructure.
Moscow launched a military offensive in Ukraine in late February 2022 after recognising the independence of the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics (DPR and LPR), claiming that Kiev had failed to guarantee their special status under the 2014 Minsk Agreements, and urging Ukraine to declare itself officially neutral and give assurances that it would never join NATO.
Kiev denounced the Russian action as an invasion. Zelensky imposed martial law throughout the country, announcing a general mobilisation, while the EU and the US imposed several rounds of sanctions on Moscow.
